Results of Yale’s university-wide faculty climate survey

December 1, 2022

Dear Fellow Members of the Yale Faculty,

We write to share the results of Yale’s first university-wide faculty climate survey. This survey is part of the Belonging at Yale initiative and is designed to help us identify strengths and areas that need additional work to foster a productive, vibrant, and inclusive campus culture for the faculty. Survey results for each school will be available in late January.

The survey was conducted October 28 to December 20, 2021, during the height of the Delta and Omicron waves of the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 6,266 Yale faculty members (across all ranks and tracks) were invited to take the confidential survey, which was administered by Yale’s Office of the Provost in partnership with MIT’s Office of Institutional Research. The response rate was 30 percent. The survey will be administrated every two years, and we will work with schools and departments on increasing participation in the future.

Survey results were positive overall; however, we see opportunities for improvement in mentoring and other areas. Deans—with support from our offices—are responding to what we learned from the survey. For example, schools are updating action plans for diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging; enhancing mentoring programs; and advancing community-building efforts within and across academic fields and demographics.

We are grateful to everyone who completed the survey. Your input helps us to continue improving our campus culture and creating an environment where all members of the faculty can do their best work.

With best regards,
