Announcement – Strengthening Yale’s Digital Infrastructure
June 24, 2022
Dear Operations Colleagues and University Leaders,
As a global research university, Yale has a longstanding responsibility to create and share knowledge that improves the world for this and future generations. Essential to this mission is superior information technology that supports students, faculty members, and staff in their education, research, and scholarship. Indeed, the pandemic has reminded us that our IT systems must evolve with unprecedented interconnectivity. Today, we are pleased to share plans to strengthen Yale’s digital infrastructure through the establishment of a vice president for information technology and to announce the appointment of John Barden, Yale’s chief information officer, to this role, effective July 1, 2022.
The elevation of Yale’s chief information officer underscores our commitment to equipping members of our community with the necessary digital resources to teach, learn, and pursue new knowledge and solutions for pressing global challenges. And it reflects the importance of your work within the Operations Division and the continued need for strong, innovative, and responsive information technology services. The enhanced organizational structure also will place the CIO position on equal footing with other roles that report directly to the senior vice president for operations, including the vice presidents for facilities, finance, and human resources, as well as with most of our peer schools. Further, as a bolstered Office of the CIO works to safeguard Yale data and systems, today’s action will complement the realignment of public safety leadership announced earlier this week.
We are delighted that John will continue to support the IT needs of our community in his new role. Since joining Yale as chief information officer in 2017, he has served with great skill and dedication. Under his direction, Yale’s IT team has enabled the ongoing operations of the university through remote and hybrid research, work, and pedagogical delivery modalities. He has also collaborated closely with the Operations Division on unit plans for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging, as well as on the development of the Program Management and Operations Excellence team. We are grateful to John for his talent and leadership and look forward to his building on the achievements of the past five years.
At Yale, much progress is under way as we transform our physical campus landscape in alignment with our core mission of education and research. Parallel to these projects, we are working with the same vigor to develop a digital infrastructure that is equally vital to our mission. Please join us in wishing John every success as he spearheads this effort as Yale’s vice president for information technology.
Sincerely,
